Kastehelmi plates with Ostindia bowls, or Aino Aalto glasses combined with Corona porcelain? Why not! At the new flagship store Kungsgatan 1, Scandinavian design lovers can now mix and match their favourite Nordic home items to their heart’s content. Here, in the heart of Stockholm, Swedish Rörstrand and Finnish iittala moved in together to offer shoppers a world of fresh tableware inspiration.
The large flagship store is housed in a stately building right on Kungsgatan, the Swedish capital’s most prominent shopping street. Decked out with well-dressed tables, ceiling lamps, plants, and fully functional kitchens, a wander through Kungsgatan 1 feels like visiting a friend with excellent taste. Various friends, rather, because the two brands kept separate branded environments within the retail surface.
Fiskars Group, the parent company with both Rörstrand and iittala in its portfolio, designed the store, while Tchai took care of its development and installation. For us, it was a fantastic challenge to build and connect the two sections seamlessly to create an uninterrupted shopping experience.

Where Rörstrand’s section has mostly classic elements, such as dark-hued furniture and herringbone floors, iittala’s store is more contemporary-looking, with birch elements and epoxy floors. Using a singular understated colour palette (dark ceilings, bright floors, light grey pillar), the two environments neatly blend together.
We are very proud that the iittala and Rörstrands flagship store at Kungsgatan in Stockholm has received the Designbase Prize 2018 award for Most innovative Swedish design and lifestyle store. We loved creating this store together.
A few words from the jury: ’New thinking and prudence, which is not seen in many places, is among the reasons that the shop was chosen as the winner of the Designbase Prize 2018. Equipped with well-stocked tables, ceiling lamps, plants and fully functioning kitchens, a walk through the shop feels like visiting a friend with excellent taste.‘
The winner receives an automatic nomination for the Global Innovation Awards (GIA) which will be held in Chicago in March 2019.
